Old Spice Guys Battle in YouTube Popularity Contest [VIDEOS]
Can’t we all get along? Old Spice‘s attempt to freshen up its 18 month-old “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” campaign continues as old Old Spice guy Isaiah Mustafa and new Old Spice guy Fabio square off via YouTube.
The “Mano a Mano en el Bano” fight, which was hyped on Monday with challenge and response videos from Fabio and Mustafa, respectively, is actually a popularity contest. The two have created competing videos asking viewers to vote for them as favorites. To ensure social media buzz, Mustafa also encourages viewers to express their support via “Liking, sharing, tweeting, commenting, posting or all other things smart Internet people do.”
Though Old Spice seems to have set up Fabio as the fall guy by presenting him as a bit of a bully, he gets the better lines in the two videos. “Hello old Old Spice guy — who’s gross” says Fabio, sounding like a 13 year-old girl. “To old Old Spice guy, welcome to your nightmare. Starring Fabio. With story written by Fabio and directed by Fabio. Stunts done by Fabio. And delicious catering including homemade treats and sliced fruit, of course, by Fabio.”
To continue to keep things fresh, Mustafa and Fabio are also reacting in real-time to commenters on Twitter and elsewhere. See the latest responses below.
Now for your vote: Do you think this campaign has jumped the shark or has Old Spice and ad agency Wieden + Kennedy managed to propel it beyond its apparent expiration date? Let us know in the comments.

Deleted scene from the Lost season 1 finale would have explained a lot
Had this “deleted scene” been aired during the season 1 finale of Lost, it would have answered a lot of questions.
Actually, no, it wouldn’t. It would have created a whole lot more questions in the series that already confused millions and left many feeling, well, lost at the end of every episode. At the very least this spoof put on by the Lost exec producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse at Comic-Con this weekend would have done one positive thing – reveal the name of the smoke monster.

Amy Winehouse Found Dead
Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment Saturday afternoon.
Just last month, Winehouse was forced to cancel her European tour, following a disastrous performance in Belgrade that went viral on YouTube. The troubled singer, has long struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, making many references to these struggles in her music.
TMZ confirmed earlier reports out of London, that Winehouse was found in her apartment and pronounced dead on the scene.
Best known for her 2006 breakthrough album, Back to Black, the singer was known for her deep voice and brazen lyrics. Winehouse was 27.
A Look Back at a Star for the Digital Era
Winehouse was extremely popular on YouTube. The songs from Back to Black continue to be popular cover targets for aspiring YouTube artists, thanks to its haunting lyrics and musicality. From iTunes to AOL Live, Winehouse made a number of appearances at digital focused events and distributed releases specifically for digital audiences.
At SXSW 2007, Winehouse performed an electrifying live acoustic set.
Sadly, Winehouse’s more troubled moments were captured and disseminated online as well. Earlier this summer, Winehouse’s disastrous performance in Belgrade, Serbia was caught by several audience members. The resulting fallout from the videos, which went viral, caused her to cancel her European tour and her record label issued takedown notices agains the most popular videos.

These Kittens Are Probably Better DJs Than You [VIDEO]
Each day, Mashable highlights one noteworthy YouTube video. Check out all our viral video picks.
It’s Friday, and thank the various gods that a kitten video has cut through the gloom of the work week to bring us both music and joy. Who needs Spotify when you have cats who can DJ?
These kitten DJs (who are apparently shilling for cat food) will refuse all of your requests. They will laugh in the face of lazy laptop jockeys. They will steal your black, black heart.

Defective Detective by Avner Geller and Stevie Lewis.
I discovered this as part of Cartoon Brew’s ongoing student animation festival. See some production info over at Cartoon Brew’s Defective Detective page.
I enjoyed the Looney Tuneseque qualities to this. There’s a glut of CG features these days, and only a handful ever appeal to me, so it’s great to see such a variety of great animation online — especially when it’s student work.

Augmented reality app concept conjures movie scenes shot in your location (video)
AR technology has been getting seriously powerful recently, but we still need smart little ideas like this to keep us interested. 'Augmented Reality Cinema' is a concept which would spot when you're in a famous movie location and then trigger playback of the relevant scene. Although we can't be sure the app actually works yet, the video after the break does at least show off the idea with some memorable London clips, including the classic post-infestation Westminster Bridge scene from 28 Days Later. If the designers ever need movie fans to go around tagging cinematic locations, then obviously we're keen to register our interest.

iPhone App Lets You Cut Movies Using Clips on Friends’ Phones
Here’s a new development in the social video app war: Recently-launched iPhone app Flixlab has included a feature that allows you to create collaborative videos with friends.
Flixlab [iTunes link] is a fairly comprehensive app that allows you to create movies using video clips and photos from your phone’s library (as well as newly shot footage and snaps from Facebook and other albums), tag your friends (so videos will appear on friends’ walls after sharing via Facebook), add themes and transitions (I recommend “Halloween”), and, finally, add music from your library.
“Events” is Flixlab’s collaborative mode. If your friends are using Flixlab, you can create a video using both your footage and your friend’s.
Say you’re at a wedding; if you and your friend are taking pictures and video during the wedding, you’re automatically sharing those images via the app. Just click on “Events” to unearth your friend’s video and photos, and you can add them to your own movie. It’s like having multiple angles. Check out the video below for more info:
This feature really distinguishes Flixlab from other new video-sharing apps, like Blipsnips, Viddy and Socialcam. Still, it could very well face the same issue startup Color has: You need a significant number of people to use the app in order for it to work well.
What do you think? Can Flixlab cut through the clutter?

Google announces Voice Search, Search by Image for desktop
Original: Google announces Voice Search, Search by Image for desktop

Google has announced Voice Search for desktop machines today. This feature is available right in the browser on any desktop machine and appears right next to the search box. In addition, they also announced the ability to drag and drop an image into the search bar to search for its contents using Search by Image.
Google says that in the last year, the volume of speech input has increased by a factor of 6. 2 years of non-stop speech goes through Google’s system every day.

Google says that it wants the accuracy of voice input to be seamless and they want to have it be everywhere. Every language, platform and device, in order to make it a ‘basic habit’ to use voice input. Google puts 230 billion words worth of data through their system in order to have it learn just enough English phrases to process voice queries in that language.

Google currently covers 2/3 of the worlds population with the various languages that its voice input system can recognize.

To help cover even more of the world’s population, Google is announcing Voice Search for desktop machines today.

The ability to search by voice has also been augmented with translation features and the ability to search with an image. You simply drag an image right into the search box to search for the contents of the image.

Google also demonstrated the ability by using a popularly shared image to show that you can even search for an Internet meme simply by using one of the representative images.

You can search by image at images.google.com and the feature will be rolling out over the next few days to Chrome users. There are several ways that you can get an image into the search including Firefox and Chrome extensions as well as dragging an image into the bar when you see a camera icon. Google also mentioned in their Q&A that any images that you use will be treated like any other query and will not be collected and stored.

5 Mobile Apps Trying To Do Some Social Good [VIDEOS]
Original Post: 5 Mobile Apps Trying To Do Some Social Good [VIDEOS]
A recent contest challenged developers to create apps for low-income Americans to help them get educated, find jobs, get healthy, manage their finances and so on. The contest, called Applications for Good, was organized by One Economy and AT&T to get devs inspired to do some social good.
A panel of judges narrowed the entries to five winners. You can watch the winning videos below. They feature apps for immigrants to send money to their home countries, find healthy food, get the most value from food stamps, facilitate conversations between teachers and students over social media, and manage an Individual Development Account.
Applications for Good gave cash prizes totaling $50,000, but the real goal was to motivate the developer community to start thinking about social good not just as pro-bono work but as a potential market.
One Economy, a non-profit that connects underserved communities with technology, has offered to continue assisting some of the app developers — even those who did not win — by helping them field test or connecting them to partners.
A common complaint about the smartphone market is its relatively low penetration when compared to “dumbphones,” which is why some of the winners use SMS or features that don’t require an iPhone.
The Grand Prize Winner and People's Choice Winner, it helps immigrants send money to their home countries.
MobileSaver helps people manage an Individual Development Account.
TalkChalk enables safe communication between teachers, students and parents over Facebook, email and SMS.
Nutrition Mission uses gamification to connect users to healthier food options.
